The New Normal: How To Navigate It At Work and At Home

Find out how to smoothly transition into the new normal with these tips. Be productive and find balance, whether at home or in the workplace.

The world is constantly changing and it’s not always for the better as the virus we are facing is now 3x more transmissible than before.  While we can’t control our circumstances, we can control our habits and choices. In this situation, taking extra steps to be resilient, immune, and safe is crucial.

To help you navigate this new reality, here’s a game plan that we’ve divided into two parts: what you can do to protect yourself at work and how to ensure you don’t bring sickness to your family at home.

Health and Safety Tips at Work

1. Wear the right face mask.

A face mask has become a daily essential in this new normal, especially when going out. Take note of the different types of protective masks and what kind of protection they can provide:

Aside from wearing face masks properly, don’t forget to wear a face shield over your face mask. This goes a long way in protecting yourself and the community by lessening the transmission of the virus. See the infographic below to double check if you’re wearing your mask correctly!

2. Find new ways to hold meetings.

Face-to-face meetings with colleagues and clients do have their benefits but now that health has become even more of a priority, it’s still better to practice social distancing. If meetings absolutely have to be done in person, meeting outside with social distance is better since there is more air ventilation. Still, the safest way to meet and communicate is to keep using video calls or phone calls. (But no worries; if we all stay healthy, we’ll be able to meet and interact like we used to once this is over!)

3. Wipe down commonly used items

The same vigilance you have cleaning and disinfecting at home should also apply to the workplace. Avoid sharing any items like coffee pots, printers, and landline phones if possible. If you must use shared items, everyone should be required to sanitize items before and after each use.

Having to sanitize every so often can be a little tiring but this small habit goes a long way in protecting yourself from the virus. So if you have a lot of contact with other people, make it a habit to wipe down items you use often.

4. Dress to protect yourself.

There are plenty of makeshift protective items you can wear outside, such as jackets or jumpsuits. But if you’re not taking the PPE route, wearing short sleeves, buttoned tops, and closed shoes are also recommended. Aside from covering up, this includes what items you should leave behind, such as jewelry and watches.

Reminder: if you use your sleeve to avoid touching surfaces, take extra care not to touch your face with your sleeve.

5. Wash your hands and disinfect often.

The best way to prevent the spread of infections and decrease the risk of getting sick is by washing your hands with soap and water. Keep alcohol or hand sanitizers in your bag or pocket so you can regularly keep your hands clean.

Take note of the US Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC)- and Department of Health (DOH)-approved way of washing your hands and the key times to wash them:

* Recent studies have shown that the virus, which is transmitted through droplets, can be passed from dried surfaces to humans. Experts recommend the use of gloves and alcohol-based sanitizers (70% alcohol) for people who have to handle cash frequently.

Health and Safety Tips Going Home

1. Shower and wash up

If you have been out, the first thing you should do once you're back home is to take a shower and throw your clothes in a laundry basket or washing machine.  Avoid sitting on or touching household furniture or items before taking a shower. Also, leave the shoes you wore outside of the house.

2. Disinfect commonly-touched items

When you get home, disinfect surfaces you may have touched such as light switches or doorknobs. If you drove home, clean the floorboards, steering wheel and dashboard of your car.

3. Practice social distancing.

As much as we want to be with our loved ones after a long day, it’s still best to practice social distancing at home – that’s two arm-lengths away from anyone else.

All these seem like a lot of work to do but at the end of the day, it really is about keeping yourself healthy at work so that you don’t bring home sickness to your family.
